Cinnarizine - Use | Dose | Side Effects
Cinnarizine belongs to a group of medicines used in the treatment of vertigo (dizziness). It belongs to the antihistamines. This medicine acts on the calcium channels in the vascular smooth muscle, thereby reducing vertigo. Because of this effect it is used to treat vertigo, to relieve symptoms in Meniere's disease, as well as to relieve nausea during travel (motion sickness).
Cinnarizine should be avoided in patients with Parkinson's disease as well as in the patients with extrapyramidal syndrome (abnormal involuntary movements).
Also, this drug should be avoided in patients allergic to Cinnarizine.
It must be used with extra precautions in patients with impaired hepatic or renal function, as well as in patients with low blood pressure (hypotension).
Cinnarizine can be used only with extra precautions in the following conditions:
- In patients with blood disorder known as porphyria
- In patients with prostate problems
Bear in mind that this drug can cause drowsiness and therefore you should avoid driving a vehicle and operating machinery.
Use during pregnancy and breastfeeding
Animal studies have shown no adverse effects of this drug during pregnancy, but there are no human studies. Cinnarizine can be used during pregnancy only if recommended by your doctor.
Use of Cinarizin drug in nursing mothers should be avoided.
How to use
|Balance disorder||One tablet, 1-2 times a day, after meals|
|Prevention of motion sickness||1/2 (one half) of tablet, 2 hours before the trip|
|The treatment of vestibular disorders||1/2 (one half) of tablet, 2-3 times a day|
Cinnarizine must not be used in children under the age of 5.
Be sure to take Cinarizin after meals, in order to reduce stomach side effects.
Use with other medicines (Interactions)
Cinarizin should be avoided in combination with the following drugs:
- Medicines used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Cinnarizine may enhance the effects of these medications and cause side effects.
- Drugs used to treat nausea, such as domperidone. The concomitant use of these drugs increases the risk of side effects.
- Drugs used to treat depression.
Do not use alcohol while using this medicine!
Cinnarizine may cause the following side effects:
- dry mouth,
- abdominal pain,
- loss of appetite,
- extrapyramidal syndrome (abnormal involuntary movements),
- Parkinsonism-like symptoms,
- allergy and others.
Tell your doctor if you are experiencing any of abovementioned side effects.
