Another meta-analysis that included 1173 hypertensive patients who have used magnesium supplements, has also confirmed a clinically significant reduction in blood pressure, but recommends further research to confirm this effect.

Citric acid, malic acid and glycine (amino acid) improve metabolic processes in the body, but there are no studies about their effects on BP.

Precautions and interactions

Calcium may interact with the following antihypertensive drugs:

  • Thiazide diuretics, such as: indapamide and hydrochlorothiazide. It is not recommended to take more than 1500 mg of calcium while you are on therapy with these medications because of the increased risk of milk-alkaline syndrome - a serious condition characterized by an increase in blood calcium levels that can lead to renal failure.
  • Calcium channel blockers (only when administered intravenously), such as: nifedipine, verapamil, and diltiazem. There is no evidence that increased calcium intake affects the effectiveness of oral calcium blockers. Talk to your doctor if you are taking any of these medicines.

Available data suggest that calcium supplements do not interact with beta blockers (e.g. bisoprolol, propranolol, metoprolol, atenolol and others), ACE inhibitors (e.g. ramipril, captopril, enalapril, lisinopril, cilazapril, fosinopril and others), angiotensin II receptor blockers (e.g. valsartan and losartan) and renin inhibitors (e.g. aliskiren).

Magnesium can interact with the following drugs:

  • Aminoglycoside antibiotics, such as amikacin and gentamicin. These drugs exhibit certain effects on muscles as well as magnesium, and concomitant administration may lead to side effects.
  • Quinolone antibiotics, such as: norfloxacin, ofloxacin and ciprofloxacin. Magnesium can reduce the absorption of these drugs in the digestive tract and reduce their effects.
  • Tetracycline antibiotics, such as: tetracycline and doxycycline. Magnesium binds to these drugs and reduces their effects.
  • Bisphosphonates (medicines used to treat osteoporosis), such as: zoledronic acid, alendronate (Fosamax), risedronate and etidronate. Magnesium reduces the effects of these drugs.
  • Calcium channel blockers (used to treat hypertension), such as: felodipine (Plendil), nifedipine, nicardipine, verapamil, and diltiazem. Magnesium can reduce blood pressure, and concomitant administration with these drugs can lead to a synergistic (additive) antihypertensive effect and increase the risk of hypotension.
  • Potassium-sparing diuretics (drugs that are also used to treat hypertension), such as: spironolactone, triamterene and amyloid. These drugs increase the level of magnesium in the blood, and concomitant use with magnesium supplements is not recommended.
