Motilium - Side Effects | Dose | Use

Motilium (Domperidone) works by helping your stomach that food is normally in the right direction moves through your digestive system, so that the food does not stay too long in one place. This medicine is used by adults and children 16 years and older. Motilium is a medicine that is used in two cases which have a different duration of treatment:

  • For the short-term treatment of nausea (feeling of uneasiness or the hassle) and vomiting lasting less than 48 hours.
  • To relieve symptoms after a meal, such as:
    • nausea,
    • stomach fullness,
    • belching,
    • severe abdominal bloating,
    • gas and heartburn.

In this case, the treatment will last for up to two weeks. The resulting symptoms may be due to slowing the rhythm of the stomach and digestive tract where food is not moving efficiently, as necessary, and in the right direction in the digestive tract.

Warning and precautions

This medicine is suitable for most adults and children aged 16 years and older. You can not use Motilium:

  • If you are allergic (hypersensitivity) to the active substance - Motilium maleate, or any other ingredient of the medicament.
  • If you have a disease of the pituitary gland (prolactinoma).
  • Heart problems such as:
    • heart failure,
    • if you have ever had a heart attack,
    • angina (pain behind the breastbone),
    • heart rhythm disorder including accelerated or slowed heartbeat,
  • If you have a chronic disease that affects the digestive system, for example:
    • gastric or duodenal ulcer,
    • perforation of the stomach,
    • if you have black stools, or you notice blood in the stool. This may be a sign of bleeding from the stomach or intestine.
    • If you often have severe stomach cramps, you can not use Motilium.
  • Liver or kidney problems.
  • If you are taking any of these medicines:
    • ketoconazole,
    • erythromycin.

If any of the above warning apply, or formerly related to you, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Motilium may increase the risk of heart failure and heart rhythm disorders. This risk is higher in patients older than 60 years and at doses higher than 30 mg per day.

Motilium should be used in the smallest effective dose for adults and adolescents. If any of these apply to you, please consult your doctor or pharmacist. Motilium should not be used for the treatment of motion sickness!

Use with food and drinks

Motilium is the medicine for oral use. It is recommended to take the tablets before meals.  The tablet should be swallowed whole, with a sufficient amount of water.

Pregnancy and lactation

If you are pregnant or breast-feeding:

  • Do not take Motilium if you are pregnant or could be pregnant
  • Do not take this medicine while you breastfeeding unless your doctor or other health professional told you to take this medicine.

Driving and using the machines

The medicine Motilium have no influence on the ability to drive a motor vehicle or operating machinery.

Dosage and administration

Check the following to know how long to take your treatment:

  • Only for oral use
  • Do not use the medicine Motilium more of the following doses shown in the table below.
  • Tablets are only for short-term treatment.
  • In case the symptoms of nausea and vomiting (being sick) lasting more than 48 hours, talk to your doctor
  • If symptoms such as stomach pain after eating continue after two weeks of treatment, talk to your doctor.

Children under 16 years of age

Children under 16 should not take this medicine.

Adults and children 16 years and older

Nausea and vomiting lasting less than 48 hours 10 mg 3 times a day and 10 mg once at night
Stomach discomfort and nausea after meals and drinks lasting to two weeks 10 mg 3 times a day and 10 mg once at night

If symptoms are worsen or Motilium have no effect, talk to your doctor!

If symptoms of stomach discomfort after meals last longer than 2 weeks, talk to your doctor! You should not take more than 40 mg Motilium per day!

Use with other medicines (Interaction)

Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of this medicines

  • Erythromycin,
  • Ketoconazol,
  • Bromocriptine or cabergoline (used for Parkinson's disease or pituitary tumours),
  • Ritonavir,
  • Amantadine (for viral infections),
  • Opioid analgesics such as:
    • morphine,
    • fentanyl,
    • alfentanil,
    • meperidine,
    • hydromorphone,
    • oxycodone,
    • hydrocodone.
  • Antimuscarinics (used to treat gastro intestinal disorders)


If you take more of the medicine Motilium, contact your doctor or emergency room. Take along the box with the medicine.

If you forget to take Motilium

If you forget to take medicine, take your next dose as required dosage instructions in the table above. If you forget a dose, take your next dose when needed but not more than 4 tablets (40 mg) in 24 hours. Do not take a double dose.

Side effects

  • Seizures (convulsions which affect the whole body) or epileptic seizures;
  • Involuntary movements of the face, arm or leg, excessive shaking, severe numbness or muscle spasm;
  • Allergic reactions:
    • allergy rash (such as hives),
    • itching,
    • difficulty breathing,
    • shortness of breath,
    • swelling of the face or neck,
    • flushing or fainting.

Very rare side effects (occurring in less than 1 in 10 000 patients)

  • Abnormal heart rhythm.

If occur any of the following side effects, stop using the medicine and talk to your doctor:

Common side effects (occurs in patients 1 to 10)

  • Dry mouth.

Uncommon (occurs in 1 in 100 patients)

  • Anxiety;
  • Loss of sexual desire or decreased sexual desire;
  • Drowsiness or headache;
  • Diarrhea;
  • Rash or itching;
  • Sore or strained breast or leakage of milk from the nipple;
  • The state of general weakness.

Side effects with frequency not known on available data

  • Hives;
  • Anxiety or nervousness;
  • Disorder of the eye movement;
  • Inability to urinate;
  • Breast swelling;
  • Cessation of menstruation;
  • Changes in certain laboratory test results. If you need to determine the function of the liver based on the results of a blood test tell your doctor that you are taking the medicine Motilium.
