Silymarin - Use | Dose | Side Effects

Silymarin is a natural remedy that relieves the symptoms of hepatic dysfunction. The medicine silymarin is used as adjunctive therapy of inflammatory chronic diseases of the liver, cirrhosis liver toxicity and liver damage.

Warning and precautions

Warn your doctor if you are taking other medications, have a chronic disease, a metabolic disorder, are hypersensitive to medicines or have had allergic reactions to some of them. You should not use silymarin:

  • If you are allergic (hypersensitive) to the active substance or to any of the excipients
  • If you are under 18 years of age
  • If you have a hormonal disorder (endometriosis, myoma of the uterus, breast, ovarian or uterine cancer, prostatic cancer) because of the possible estrogen-like effect, which has active medicine substance silymarin.
  • If you are not sure if any of the above applies to you, contact your doctor

Use with other medicines

Please note that this information may relate to the medicines that you no longer use, and the medicines that you are planning to apply in the future. Tell your doctor if you are taking or have recently applied any other medicines including medicines obtained without a prescription. The medicine silymarin may reduce efficacy of oral contraceptives and medicaments for use in the  hormone therapy. It can also enhance the effect of medicines such as diazepam, alprazolam, ketoconazole, lovastatin, vinblastine.

Taking with food and drinks

Silymarin should be taken after meals. Not recommended for concomitant use of alcoholic drinks with this medicine.

Pregnancy and lactation

Before you begin taking any medicine, consult your doctor or pharmacist. Silymarin may be administered during pregnancy only when it is strictly in the indicated  consultation with the doctor. Breastfeeding: Due to insufficient data on the application in nursing mothers is not recommended for application silymarin capsules if you are breastfeeding.

Medicines use

Before the first application of this medicine, consult with your doctor. Your doctor will advise you how long to take your medicine silymarin. Do not interrupt treatment until you consult with your doctor even it is occurred though the improvement of the disease. Always use medicine exactly as your doctor has advised! Check the method of application with a doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure. Your doctor may give you instructions on the application of the medicine, which will vary from what is listed below. It is very important to take your medicine exactly as your doctor said. Take silymarin capsules whole with sufficient liquid after meals. At the beginning of the treatment, or in case of severe liver damage, take two capsules of the medicine silymarin 2 times a day, and then proceed with one capsule two times a day. In the case of minor liver damage, take one capsule of a medicament silymarin 2 times per day. The decision on how long you should take your medicine silymarin should be made in consultation with your doctor. Length of application depends on the intensity and nature of chronic liver dysfunction. Clinical studies indicate that the products on the basis of the standardized extract of milk thistle fruit can use a longer period of time, 24 months or longer, if necessary, consult a doctor. Children: Not recommended for use of the medicine silymarin in children younger than 18 years.

Side effects

While taking the medicine silymarin rarely may occur slight disturbances functions of gastro-intestinal tract: a mild laxative effect (diarrhea), feeling bloated abdomen, and in rare case of allergic reactions. Disorder that occurs at the level of the ear and labyrinth: rarely get to reinforcement of the existing balance disorders. Disorders of the skin and subcutaneous tissue in isolated cases are possible rash and itching. Side effects are transient and abate after discontinuation of the medicine. If you notice any of these or any other side effects, which is not listed here, please tell your doctor or pharmacist.

If you forget to take the medicine

If you forget to take medication on time, do not use double dose later. Simply continue to use the medicine according to the usual schedule. If you forget to take a dose, take the medication as soon as possible.
